Module 2 ยท Plant Lab Tests
The Plant Laboratory
Plant laboratory tests turn samples into operating evidence. Useful results depend on a suitable method, trained analyst, clean work area, maintained equipment, acceptable reagents and standards, and complete records.
Separate routine process-control work from compliance analysis. Some field or plant measurements may be allowed under state-approved conditions, while other compliance samples must go to a certified laboratory using an approved method.
Before testing, confirm sample identity, method revision, instrument status, reagent condition, and required quality-control checks. Arrange the work so clean supplies stay protected and samples cannot be switched. Record observations when they occur instead of reconstructing them at the end of the shift. Record the result with its units, time, location, analyst, and any dilution or qualifier.
When a result is outside the instrument range or conflicts with controls, do not force a number into the log. Stop, preserve the evidence, troubleshoot under the procedure, and escalate any reporting consequence. Identify which samples and time period may be affected. An authorized backup method can support operations only when its use and limits are documented.
Exam Need to Know
- Some compliance samples need a certified laboratory and approved method.
- Out-of-range result? Don't force a number into the log.
- Trust a number only when sample, method, equipment, controls, and record agree.
