What is BOD in wastewater?
BOD is an oxygen-demand measurement. It helps describe how strongly a prepared wastewater sample used dissolved oxygen during the test.

The Technical Explanation
Biochemical oxygen demand describes dissolved-oxygen depletion under defined test conditions as microorganisms act on biodegradable material in a prepared sample. In regulated wastewater monitoring, BOD5 is a five-day parameter measured using an approved method.
BOD Describes Demand—not the Cause.
A BOD result does not directly count microorganisms, identify the individual compounds in the sample, or diagnose a treatment problem by itself. Operators interpret it alongside other results and process observations.
