Lagoons · Berms, Liners, and Site Care
What Does a Lagoon Liner Do?
A lagoon liner limits how much wastewater seeps into the soil and groundwater. Liners may be compacted soil, clay, synthetic sheeting, or another approved system. Each type has its own inspection and repair needs.
Signs of a leak may include water loss you cannot explain, ground that stays wet, seepage, odd plant growth, settling, or changes in monitoring-well results. Evaporation, bad flow data, and changes in operation can also affect water level. Weigh all the evidence together.
Do not probe a suspected liner defect or lower the lagoon without authorization. Protect exposed liner from vehicles, tools, animals, and sunlight as the design requires.
Some permits require seepage testing or groundwater monitoring. Record any suspected leak and have it evaluated under the plant's engineering and regulatory procedures.
Key point: Water loss is a warning to investigate, not proof of where a leak is.
