Wastewater Pumps · Working Around Equipment

How Do Duty and Standby Pumps Work?

Standby equipment must be ready before the duty equipment fails.

The duty unit is the machine currently assigned to carry the load. A standby unit is available to take over. Some controls rotate duty automatically to share wear. Others require the operator to choose the lead machine.

A standby pump is not ready simply because its switch says auto. Its suction and discharge valves must be correct. Power must be available. The wet well, level control, lubrication, seal system, and discharge path must support operation.

Exercise standby equipment under the plant procedure. Watch it start, build pressure, move flow, and stop normally. Record the result. Finding a closed valve or failed starter during a planned test is much better than finding it during a high-level alarm.
