What Is a Permit Averaging Period?

An averaging period defines which results combine for a permit comparison. Daily, weekly, monthly, seasonal, and annual averages answer different compliance questions. Follow the exact calculation. Use the data rules in the permit.

A longer average does not make a high result unimportant. A short upset can affect the final average, signal equipment failure, or trigger another permit condition. Staff should escalate unusual results under plant procedures.

For process control, use shorter trends to act early while also tracking the permit period. Keep missing, rejected, qualified, and replacement data visible according to the approved reporting procedure. Never create an average by silently removing an inconvenient result.

Automated averages should be checked after data edits, time-zone changes, missing results, or instrument replacement to protect the reporting record.

Key point: Manage the process with timely data while calculating compliance over the permit's stated period.
