Nutrient Removal · Why Nutrients Matter
What Forms of Phosphorus Are in Wastewater?
Phosphorus also appears in more than one form. Orthophosphate is a dissolved form that microbes can use and metal salts can readily precipitate. Polyphosphates contain linked phosphate units. Organic phosphorus is part of cells and other organic material.
Total phosphorus includes dissolved and particulate forms measured through the approved lab procedure. Soluble reactive phosphorus or orthophosphate can help a staff member see what remains available for biological uptake or chemical reaction. The method and sample preparation matter when comparing results.
Particulate phosphorus can leave with effluent suspended solids. A plant may have good biological or chemical capture and still miss a tight total phosphorus goal if final solids escape. This is why phosphorus control and solids control must be read together.
When total phosphorus rises, answer the dissolved question and the solids question one at a time before choosing a biological, chemical, or separation response.
Key point: Total phosphorus reflects both dissolved phosphorus and phosphorus carried by solids.
