Trickling Filters and RBCs · Common Operating Problems

How Do Operators Control Trickling Filter Flies?

These small insects can breed in moist biological growth around trickling filters. Large numbers can bother staff, neighbors, or nearby buildings. They tend to increase where surfaces stay damp but are not flushed often.

From safe access points, check walls, drains, splash zones, unused channels, and poorly wetted media. Note the weather, the spray pattern, recirculation, housekeeping, and where the insects gather.

Control should start with the process and housekeeping causes named in the plant plan. Keep the media evenly wetted where required. Remove buildup safely as the plan allows. Repair leaks and fix areas where water sits still. Do not use a pesticide or other chemical without approval.

Any chemical use must follow the label, plant procedures, and the SDS. Flies breed where growth stays damp but is not washed. More flow or recirculation to flush the media, wetting the walls, keeping the arms turning, and flooding the filter by plan all break the breeding cycle.

Key point: Filter fly control starts with finding the damp breeding areas and fixing the process or housekeeping conditions behind them.
