What Is a Sewage Lift Station?
Lift stations move wastewater when gravity cannot reach the next point.
Low neighborhoods, flat land, hills, and rivers can make a gravity route difficult. A lift station receives wastewater in a wet well. Pumps then move it through a force main to a higher sewer or toward treatment.
Every station has a normal level range and limited storage. Operators learn how incoming flow, wet-well size, pump capacity, and the downstream sewer fit together.
For example, a pump may start normally while the wet-well level keeps rising. That means the operator must look beyond the start signal. The pump, valves, force main, or downstream path may not be moving enough flow.
