Water Distribution · Main Work
Why Are Water Mains Flushed?
Distribution flushing removes stagnant water or loose deposits, restores desired conditions, and can verify flow paths. A planned sequence controls direction, velocity, pressure, discharge, water use, and customer impact.
Before opening a hydrant or blowoff, confirm valve configuration, destination, erosion control, traffic, dechlorination where required, nearby sensitive customers, and the measurements used to determine completion.
Opening every outlet at once may reduce pressure and spread disturbed material. Clear-looking discharge alone may not meet the system’s approved water-quality criteria.
Flush from a known clean source toward the selected outlet, monitor the required field indicators, and document time and volume. Stop if pressure, flooding, or discharge control becomes unsafe.
Key point: Opening every outlet at once can drop pressure and spread disturbed material. Clear-looking discharge may not meet approved criteria.
