Water Distribution · Storage
What Is Tank Turnover?
Turnover replaces stored water, while mixing distributes entering water through the tank. A tank can cycle in level yet retain poorly exchanged zones because of inlet geometry, temperature differences, or short-circuiting.
Use level cycles, inlet and outlet timing, temperature profiles, disinfectant residual at representative locations, mixer status, and hydraulic modeling where available. One sample near an inlet may not represent the tank.
Increasing mixer run time cannot correct every turnover problem, and increasing turnover may not eliminate stratification. The cause determines whether hydraulic operation, mixing, or both need attention.
If upper and lower samples move differently, confirm sample quality and investigate stratification or incomplete circulation. Make controlled changes and verify their effect across the tank.
Key point: Turnover replaces stored water; mixing spreads entering water through the tank. A tank can cycle in level and still have poorly mixed zones.
