Monitoring and Compliance · Drinking Water Rules and Records
What Is Public Notification?
Public notice tells customers when a drinking water rule is broken or the water may pose a health risk.
Federal rules use three tiers. Tier 1 is for urgent health risks, such as E. coli in the water, and needs notice as soon as possible, within 24 hours. Tier 2 is for other violations with possible health effects, and needs notice within 30 days. Tier 3 is for less urgent issues, often reported once a year. The primacy agency sets the details and may order more.
Don't pick a tier from memory or make up health wording. Report the confirmed facts through your compliance chain right away, and use the agency's instructions and approved templates.
A notice must say what happened, who is affected, possible health effects, what customers should do, what the system is doing, and who to contact. Keep the notice, proof of delivery, and agency direction. Fixing the problem does not cancel a notice that is already due.
Key point: Public notice has three tiers by urgency; operators supply confirmed facts and never make up health advice.
