The formula

Formula

  • Sludge volume index

    SVI, mL/g = (SSV₃₀, mL/L)(1,000 mg/g) ÷ MLSS, mg/L

Worked example

Step by Step

A 1 L settleometer reads 300 mL after 30 min. The MLSS is 2,500 mg/L. What is the SVI?

  1. A 1 L cylinder reading of 300 mL is 300 mL/L.

  2. Multiply by 1,000 mg/g: 300 mL/L × 1,000 mg/g = 300,000.

  3. Divide by the MLSS: 300,000 ÷ 2,500 mg/L = 120 mL/g.

Answer: 120 mL/g

Exam traps

Where People Lose Points

  • Using MLVSS. SVI uses the MLSS of the same sample.
  • Forgetting the 1,000 mg/g. Without it, 300 ÷ 2,500 gives 0.12, which is far too small.
  • Reading the cylinder early. The standard SVI uses the 30 min reading.
