The formula

Formulas

  • Surface overflow rate

    Surface Overflow Rate, gpd/ft² = Flow, gpd ÷ Area, ft²

  • Area of a circle

    Area = (0.785)(Diameter²)

Worked example

Step by Step

A 50 ft diameter clarifier receives 1.2 MGD. What is the surface overflow rate?

  1. Find the surface area: 0.785 × 50 ft × 50 ft = 1,962.5 ft².

  2. Put the flow in gallons per day: 1.2 MGD × 1,000,000 gal/MG = 1,200,000 gpd.

  3. Divide the flow by the area: 1,200,000 gpd ÷ 1,962.5 ft² = 611 gpd/ft².

Answer: 611 gpd/ft²

Exam traps

Where People Lose Points

  • Using the radius in 0.785 × D². That formula takes the full diameter; with a radius, use 3.14 × r².
  • Dividing MGD by the area. The answer must be in gpd/ft², so convert the flow to gpd first.
  • Using the whole plant flow when two clarifiers share it. Split the flow among the clarifiers in service, or add their areas.
