Wastewater Disinfection · Operating Chlorination
What Is Flow Pacing?
Flow pacing changes chemical feed as wastewater flow rises or falls.
A controller receives a flow signal and sends a matching command to the feed pump. If flow doubles, the system may increase feed to hold a similar applied dose. The exact response depends on the facility’s control setup.
Flow pacing does not correct for every water-quality change. Chlorine demand can rise even when flow stays steady. Many plants combine flow pacing with residual feedback or operator checks. The operator must understand which signal is in control.
For example, a flowmeter may fail high and command extra chemical. Compare displayed flow with other plant clues, such as pump operation, channel level, or another meter. If the signal is not believable, follow the procedure for safe manual or backup control.
