Wastewater Disinfection · Ultraviolet Disinfection

What Is UV Transmittance?

UV transmittance describes how well UV light passes through the water.

Clear-looking water can still absorb UV light. Dissolved material, color, and fine particles can lower transmittance. When less light passes through, organisms may receive less effective exposure at the same lamp power.

Some plants measure transmittance with a lab or online instrument. The result must use the correct method and clean optical parts. Fingerprints, bubbles, dirty cells, and poor sample handling can change the reading.

An operator should compare transmittance with turbidity, solids, upstream treatment, and UV intensity. If transmittance falls, raising lamp power may help within the system design, but the upstream cause still needs attention. Follow the site’s response plan.
