What Is a Grinder Pump Station?

A grinder pump has a cutting mechanism that reduces some wastewater solids before pumping. Grinder stations are often used where flows are small or where wastewater enters a pressure-sewer system. In a pressure sewer, each home or small group of homes has its own grinder pump that pushes wastewater into a shared small-diameter pressure pipe.

Grinding does not make wipes, grease, or unsuitable materials harmless. Fibers may still wrap around moving parts, grease may restrict piping, and hard objects may damage the cutter or pump.

A grinder mechanism can retain mechanical energy and may restart if energy is not controlled. Operators must not reach into equipment or open it until the plant's lockout/tagout procedure has isolated and verified all energy sources.

Routine work includes reviewing alarms, checking run patterns, observing the station area, and following manufacturer maintenance instructions. Repeated jams may indicate a source-control or collection-system problem.

Key point: Grinder pumps reduce some solids, but they do not remove the need for proper disposal and safe maintenance.
