Lift Stations · Power, Generators, and Temporary Pumping
What Is a Transfer Switch?
A transfer switch changes the station's electrical supply from normal power to an alternate source. An automatic transfer switch can act without an operator when it senses a qualifying power problem.
Transfer involves electrical and mechanical actions that must occur in the intended sequence. A failed or incomplete transfer may leave some equipment without power even though the generator is running.
Operators should verify source indication, pump availability, alarms, and stable operation through approved methods. Do not defeat interlocks or move internal parts by hand. An interlock is a built-in safety device that blocks an unsafe action, such as connecting two power sources at the same time.
Testing must be coordinated because pumps, ventilation, lighting, communications, and alarms may change state. Follow manufacturer instructions and plant electrical procedures.
Key point: The transfer switch connects backup power to the station and must be tested as part of the complete system.
