Solids Handling · Digestion and Stabilization
What Is Aerobic Digestion?
Aerobic digestion uses air and mixing to support organisms that break down part of the solids.
Blowers or surface aerators supply oxygen. Mixing helps keep solids in contact with that oxygen. Operators watch air delivery, dissolved oxygen if provided, temperature, foam, odor, and solids inventory. Too little mixing may leave settled material in the tank. Air equipment needs maintenance like any other machine.
One blower trips overnight. A running companion may keep air moving, but the operator checks actual airflow and tank conditions before assuming treatment is unchanged.
Record the failed equipment and the time of the change. Use the site plan for reducing feed or calling support.
Aerobic digestion consumes air and energy. More air is not automatically better. Check whether the distribution system delivers air throughout the vessel and whether the tank remains mixed. A foam change may call for investigation of feed and mixing, not just a new blower setpoint.
Key point: Aerobic digestion uses air and mixing to break down part of the solids. More air is not automatically better.
