What Does Polymer Do in Solids Handling?

A polymer may help small solids join into larger clumps before mechanical separation.

Polymer is a processing aid, not a cure for every feed problem. Different products and make-down systems have their own instructions. Too little may leave fine solids in the return liquid. Too much can waste chemical, make equipment slippery, or hurt separation. Operators should follow supplier and plant procedures.

A press begins producing wet cake after the polymer tank is changed. Before increasing dose, the operator checks that the new solution was mixed and delivered correctly.

Watch the actual floc, meaning joined solids, at the approved viewing point. Keep chemical spills contained.

Polymer solutions may need time and water quality suited to their make-down system. A new batch can look mixed before it is ready for the process. Follow the supplier and facility instructions. If performance changes after a batch switch, check concentration and delivery before blaming the sludge.

Key point: Too little polymer can leave fine solids in the return liquid. Too much wastes chemical and can hurt separation.
