How Does a Belt Press Work?

A belt press drains conditioned sludge and then squeezes it between two moving belts.

First, water drains through a belt in a gravity section. Then two belts come together around rollers and compress the sludge. At discharge, scrapers remove cake from both belts. Wash water cleans the belts for another pass. A picture that shows cake simply riding off one belt misses this key action.

A belt tracks toward one side after wash nozzles clog. The operator sees uneven cake and follows the shutdown and cleaning procedure.

Follow the actual feed, polymer, drainage, compression, scraping, wash, and cake paths during a safe round.

At the press discharge, two belts separate and the scrapers release cake. The cake should fall into the designed chute, not collect behind a guard. Inspect the scraper condition from outside the hazard area. Worn blades can leave material on a belt and cause tracking or wash trouble.

Key point: A belt press first drains sludge by gravity, then squeezes it between two belts around rollers.
