Wastewater Safety · PPE, Hygiene, and Biological Hazards
How Do Operators Choose the Right PPE?
Personal protective equipment must match the actual hazard and task.
Common wastewater PPE includes safety glasses, splash goggles, face shields, gloves, boots, hard hats, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, chemical clothing, and fall-protection equipment. Some tasks require respiratory protection.
More PPE is not always safer. Bulky gloves can create a snag hazard near equipment. A face shield alone may not protect against chemical splash to the eyes. The hazard assessment and procedure identify the correct combination.
Inspect PPE before use. Check fit, condition, cleanliness, expiration, and compatibility. Replace damaged equipment. Know how to remove contaminated PPE without touching skin or clean clothing.
Store PPE where heat, sunlight, dirt, and chemicals will not damage it. Shared equipment needs cleaning between users. Personal equipment still needs inspection. If a required item is missing or does not fit, delay the task rather than wearing something that only looks protective.
