Wastewater Safety · Safe Work Starts Before the Task
What Is a Job Hazard Review?
A job hazard review breaks work into steps and matches each step with controls.
The review may be called a job hazard analysis, job safety analysis, or pre-task plan. The name matters less than the process. List the steps, identify what can go wrong, and choose how to prevent harm.
Include startup and cleanup. Many injuries happen while moving tools, releasing pressure, removing guards, testing equipment, or restoring service. Also consider what another operator, contractor, or automatic control might do.
Use the review as a conversation, not paperwork completed after the job. Stop if conditions change. Update the plan before continuing. A good review gives every worker the same understanding of the task.
Walk through the sequence out loud. One person may know that a valve leaks through, while another knows an automatic pump starts after a delay. The shared discussion brings that knowledge into the plan. Record the important controls so a shift change or contractor receives the same information.
