Wastewater Safety · Falls, Lifting, Traffic, and Physical Hazards

How Does Fall Protection Work?

Fall protection must prevent the fall or stop it without creating another deadly hazard.

Guardrails and covers prevent exposure. Personal fall-restraint systems keep a worker from reaching the edge. Fall-arrest systems stop a fall after it begins. The systems use different anchors and clearances.

Inspect harnesses, lanyards, connectors, lifelines, and anchors before use. Wear the harness correctly. Calculate clearance under the approved plan so the worker cannot strike equipment, water, or the ground.

A suspended worker needs prompt rescue. Plan rescue before using fall arrest. Do not attach to piping, handrails, or unknown structures. Use approved anchors and trained workers.
