Wastewater Safety · Hazardous Energy and Electrical Safety
What Is Hot Work?
Hot work can ignite gas, vapor, dust, coatings, insulation, and nearby material.
Hot work includes welding, cutting, brazing, grinding, and other spark or flame work. A permit process checks the area, atmosphere, combustible material, ventilation, fire protection, and nearby operations.
Drain, clean, isolate, and test wastewater equipment when required. Continue gas monitoring where conditions may change. A tank or pipe that looks empty can still contain flammable vapor.
Sparks can travel through floor openings, ducts, and pipe penetrations. Inspect the opposite side and lower levels before work. Fire-resistant blankets and screens must be placed without trapping fumes or blocking exits. The fire watch needs access to every area sparks can reach.
Use a trained fire watch during and after work for the required time. Protect openings where sparks can travel. Stop when atmospheric readings, wind, process flow, or nearby chemical work changes.
