What Is a Grab Sample?
A grab sample represents the condition at one defined place and collection time.

A grab sample is collected at one location and time. It describes the condition present during that collection moment. The permit or approved method tells you which sample type to use.
Common Grab Uses
Grab samples are often used when a measurement needs to describe a specific time and place, especially for parameters that can change quickly. Common examples include pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and chlorine residual. Tests with short holding times are usually collected as grab samples because the sample needs to be tested soon after collection. Record the exact collection location and time with the sample. The permit or approved method tells you which sample type to use.
