What Is Holding Time for a Lab Sample?
Verify the test-specific holding-time requirement from the recorded collection time before analysis.
A Collection-To-Analysis Limit
Holding time defines the allowed elapsed-time relationship between collection and the required stage of analysis for a particular test. The collection date and time anchor that relationship. Receipt, transfer, storage, or relabeling does not create a new collection time.
Different From Storage
A sample can be stored as required and still exceed its holding time; correct storage does not pause the clock. Confirm the requested analysis, recorded collection time, applicable requirement, and planned start using the current regulation, method, or SOP. If timing is uncertain, preserve the facts and follow the laboratory's review procedure. The required analytical stage can differ by test, so do not assume every holding time ends at the same activity.
