A representative sample is selected to answer the monitoring question—not merely for convenience.
What Representative Means
A representative sample is a portion of water collected so it describes the condition or process you are trying to evaluate. It does not mean every part of a treatment process is identical. It means the sample fits the purpose of the measurement.
Start With The Purpose
The purpose may be to describe incoming wastewater, conditions in a treatment basin, or water leaving the facility. That question guides the required location, timing, and collection approach. A sample is only representative if it was collected from the right place and at the right time for the condition or process you're trying to evaluate.
