What Does pH Tell an Operator?
pH describes acidic or basic condition; its significance depends on the process and monitoring purpose.
Acidic To Basic
The pH scale describes hydrogen-ion activity as an acidic or basic condition. Seven is neutral on the familiar scale; values below seven are more acidic and values above seven are more basic.
Why Treatment Cares
Biological organisms and chemical reactions can respond to pH. A substantial change may accompany a different influent, chemical-feed condition, or process upset, but the number alone does not identify the cause.
Context Controls Meaning
Influent, aeration-basin, and effluent pH results serve different purposes. Compare the result with the applicable permit, SOP, process range, trend, and related observations rather than using one universal target.
